Have you ever heard about FemTech? It is short for female technology. It refers to technological start-ups founded by women and that are usually focused on women’s health. This sector includes fertility apps, women’s sexual wellness solutions and period-tracking apps, among other services.
I still remember the day one of my friends secretly asked me “Hey, do you know about ‘periods’?” I was confused and I answered “No… what’s that?” She just smiled at me and tried to explain and all our group of girls gathered to listen to her. Everyone was a bit uncomfortable, but curious, about this menstruation process. A few of them had just entered this beautiful phase of life and a few, like me, were about to begin it.
Almost four years ago now, I was in Indonesia preparing to lead a yoga teacher training beginning in 72 hours. My phone rang. On the other end, came the news that my sister had just died from a heroin overdose. Speechless and gutted, I pulled my arms in front of my chest, dropped my head into my hands and felt paralyzed.
It is said that when a woman is pregnant her ability to listen to the cues of her body and nervous system are greatly enhanced. This is a special gift given to us at a crucial time when the way that we live our lives has such an incredible influence on the life of another human being.
