Sometimes we put ourselves aside. Work, our partner, our children, our parents, occupy all of our time and one day we realize we have completely forgotten ourselves.
There is a phrase that I heard a long time ago and that has been extremely valuable to me. This phrase comes back to my mind, again and again, every time I get lost: “the urgent often steals the place of the important”. This is what usually happens in our lives. We take so much care of what we feel is urgent, that we no longer have room for what is important.
And nothing is more important than you!
Here are a few simple tricks that will allow you to stop and come back to you whenever you need to.
Breathe
It doesn’t seem very difficult, does it? And yet how many times a day are you aware that you are breathing?
When you feel overwhelmed by some situation Stop and Breathe consciously. Bring your attention to the breath, feel your lungs fill with air, feel your abdomen expand. When you breathe, you are in your body. If you do it with full attention, you are in the present moment … and the present is a gift!
You are in life. You are here. The world is full of possibilities and you are in it, at this precise moment and are of vital importance.
Look yourself in the eyes
What color are your eyes? Could you define their nuances without looking at them in a mirror?
Your eyes allow you to see the world, the lights and shadows, the shapes and colors. Take a few minutes to look into your eyes. Observe them in the mirror. Look at their shape, color, and how your pupil expands or contracts with the different changes of light. Observe the different shades. Recognize yourself through your own gaze. Your eyes can see everything, but they cannot observe themselves. Give them a moment of contemplation and presence. Allow them to recognize the beauty that lives in them. Allow yourself to recognize the beauty that lives in you.
Talk to yourself and think with love
Sometimes we are our biggest critics. We treat ourselves badly, we talk and think cruelly and we end up believing that we are not valuable enough.
Your thoughts are your responsibility. You can learn to relate to them in a healthy way. Observe each of the thoughts that come to your mind and consciously transform them into a positive message for you – a message of love and optimism.
Reconcile with your body
Your body is your temple, your sacred place. Bring your attention to your body. Observe it without judgment. Reconcile with it and each of its parts, those that you love and those that you don’t like so much. They are all necessary because each of them is part of your life story. Look at it and treat it with love and gratitude, because you are here because of it.
Spend time with you
Give yourself quality time. Remember those things that made you happy and that for one reason or another you have stopped doing. Go back to them and integrate them into your life. Meditate. Meditation connects us with our essence and allows us to stop and feel. Go for a walk in nature, and enjoy the scenery, smells, colors, and textures without haste. Make yourself a tea and enjoy the process. Take it easy, savoring the present moment.
Smile
When you smile, your body produces four hormones, which together are capable of reducing stress, lowering your heart rate, increasing productivity, and reducing anxiety. Amazing, right?
